"Being Santa isn't about being the center of attention. It's about making the person in front of you feel like they are."
Barry Swindall is a lifelong actor, ordained minister, professional Santa Claus, teacher, and mentor whose life has been shaped by one central calling: bringing joy, hope, and the spirit of Christmas to others.
Barry's journey as Santa began more than 50 years ago, when he first put on the red suit in 1973, appearing at schools, churches, charitable events, and community gatherings. What began as an opportunity to entertain eventually became something much deeper: a personal ministry and lifelong mission.
Long before becoming known for his work as Santa, Barry developed his skills as a professional actor, performing in television, film, and on stage. His theatrical background taught him the importance of character, storytelling, improvisation, listening, and connecting authentically with an audience. Those skills would later become an important part of his approach to portraying Santa Claus and training other Christmas performers.
A defining moment came while Barry was portraying Kris Kringle in a stage production of Miracle on 34th Street. Backstage, he experienced what he describes as a calling to take the role of Santa beyond seasonal entertainment and make it a meaningful part of his life's work. From that point forward, Santa became more than a character Barry played. It became a way to serve others.
As an ordained minister, Barry brings his Christian faith naturally into his understanding of Santa Claus. He believes Santa can be an ambassador of generosity, compassion, encouragement, and Christlike love while respecting the families and communities he serves.
Today, Barry is known as Main Street Santa and has become a teacher and mentor within the Christmas performer community. He has trained and encouraged fellow Santas and continues developing educational programs designed to help performers improve not only their appearance and technique, but also their confidence, communication skills, professionalism, purpose, and ability to create unforgettable moments.
His training philosophy is reflected in programs such as the S.T.A.R. Method and North Pole Conversations, through which Barry challenges Christmas performers to continually invest in themselves and recognize the responsibility that comes with wearing the red suit.
Barry's philosophy is simple: being Santa isn't about being the center of attention. It's about making the person in front of you feel like they are.
After more than five decades in the red suit, Barry Swindall continues to act, teach, mentor, minister, and carry forward the traditions of Santa Claus - one conversation, one child, one family, and one Christmas memory at a time.
A professional development community for Christmas performers who want to improve their craft, presence, and purpose.
